The Careful Stone Mason and the Tiny Highland Beetles

In a high Andean village, a skilled stone worker named Kusi stood in the market square. Large grey rocks lay around his feet. The village sat on a steep slope, surrounded by green terraced fields. The sky was dark. Heavy rains would arrive by tomorrow. The villagers needed Kusi to build a strong stone wall to protect their food stalls.

Kusi had to choose between speed and safety. If he hurried, the wall might crumble under the rain. If he worked slowly, the storm would strike before he finished. A farmer named Chuki ran to him. Chuki pointed at the black clouds. “You must place the stones now,” Chuki said. “Our harvest is in the square. A mudslide will ruin our food if the wall is not ready.”

Kusi lifted a massive flat stone. Underneath it, he saw a nesting family of tiny highland beetles. These little golden creatures were busy clearing dry grass. Kusi stopped his heavy hammer. He did not want to hurt them. “I cannot lay this stone here,” Kusi said. “It will crush these small beetles. They keep our soil healthy. We need them for our crops.”

Chuki shook his head. “We do not have time to move beetles,” Chuki cried. “The storm is almost here. The safety of our families is more important than small bugs. We must work fast.”

The two men stood in the market square, each having a valid point. Chuki wanted to protect the food that kept the village fed. Kusi wanted to protect the tiny creatures that kept the soil alive. A crowd of villagers gathered. They had come for communal labor, ready to help Kusi lift the heavy stones. Now, they stood silent. They looked at the dark sky and then at the tiny beetle nest.

Kusi closed his eyes and thought. He saw that both he and Chuki were correct. The village needed the wall immediately, but the soil also needed the beetles. He looked at the flat stone. Then, he smiled.

“We can do both,” Kusi said. “We will build a tiny stone arch at the bottom of the wall. It will leave a safe space for the beetles. It will also let the rainwater drain through without washing the dirt away. The wall will be stronger, and the beetles will remain safe. We can work together to build it quickly.”

Chuki looked at the beetle nest, then at the sky. He understood that Kusi cared for the whole valley, big and small. “Let us build it together,” Chuki said.

The villagers used their collective strength to lift the stones. Kusi carefully carved a curved space inside the base rocks. He placed the tiny arch over the nest. The beetles stayed safe inside their dry home. The villagers passed stones from hand to hand along the steep path. They worked fast, but they worked carefully.

The wall rose strong and high, completed just as the first cold drops of rain began to fall. The market square remained dry and safe. No one cheered or made a grand speech. Instead, they shared a quiet meal, knowing that trust in one another made their village whole.

Moral: Trusting one another helps a community find solutions that protect all life.
