✦ A story about Cooperation

The Clever Potter and the Hurry at the Well

Gopal was a potter in a small South Asian village. He made beautiful clay pots. Every year, before the monsoon rains came, the village held a grand seasonal fair. People gathered in the dusty courtyard to share food, play games, and buy Gopal’s sturdy pots.

One dry morning, Gopal went to the desert well. The desert well was the only place to get clean water. It was deep and had slippery steps. Gopal always walked down the steps very slowly to keep his pots safe.

Suddenly, a fancy carriage stopped near the well. Out stepped a proud minister from the king’s grand court. He wore bright silk clothes and had a very big smile.

“I need one hundred pots of water for the king’s feast!” the minister shouted. “And I need them now! Move faster, potter!”

Gopal looked at the deep well. “Sir, the steps are wet,” Gopal said softly. “If we rush, we might slip. The pots will break, and the water will be lost. It is better to be safe.”

The minister stamped his foot. “I do not care about safety! I only care about speed! A quick worker is a good worker!”

Gopal smiled. He decided to use a bit of silly wisdom, just like the clever court jesters do.

“Ah, you are so wise, great minister!” Gopal said. “If speed is what you want, we should not use this slow bucket. We should throw the empty clay pots directly into the deep well! They will catch the water much faster that way.”

The minister nodded. “Yes! Do that!”

Gopal took a lovely clay pot and tossed it down the well.

Crash!

The pot broke into many tiny pieces at the bottom.

“Oh dear,” Gopal said, looking sad. “The pot was so excited to get the water quickly. It hugged the bottom of the well too fast. Let us throw another pot to help it!”

“Wait!” the minister yelled. “That is silly! The pot is broken!”

“Then I have another fast plan,” Gopal said with a straight face. “Let us fill the pots with dry sand first. Sand is very easy to find. It will make the pots heavy so they do not break when we throw them.”

The minister stared at him. “But sand is not water! The king cannot drink sand!”

“But it is much faster!” Gopal replied. “You said speed is the only thing that matters.”

The minister’s face turned red. He saw a crowd of villagers gathering in the courtyard nearby. They were all smiling quietly at Gopal’s silly talk. The minister realized how foolish he looked.

Gopal bowed low. “Great minister, our village depends on the desert well. We know that rushing leads to broken pots. If we do not help each other to work safely, we all go thirsty. When we take our time, everyone gets water, and the pots stay whole for our fair.”

The minister stopped shouting. He saw that Gopal was right. He agreed to wait. Gopal and the villagers worked together, walking safely down the steps. Soon, all the pots were filled with clean water.

Moral: Working carefully together keeps the whole village safe and happy.
