✦ A story about Generosity

Intelligent villager and miserable goat

Once upon a time a villager, named Ojha went to city to sell his cow. He was quite hopeful to get a good price for it. On the way he met two shrewd businessmen. They asked him about his purpose of coming to city. He innocently told them everything. On listening to his purpose, businessmen said “what makes you think, anybody would want to buy your Goat”. Surprised Ojha said “This is not a goat sir!” businessmen restated confidently “it looks no better than a goat and you won’t get much for this miserable goat!” Confused Ojha tried to ignore them and started walking silently. On seeing their bait going waste Business men started talking loudly with each other –“Poor young man! He travelled so far for this miserable goat which will fetch him hardly 50-100 Rs. We should help him out, lets pay him 500 Rs for this Goat” Ojha was listening to the whole conversation on his back. He slowed down in the hope of getting some good offer from the business men. He turned around and asked them about the final price that they were ready to offer. After round of bargaining, the deal was finalized on Rs. 550. Business men appreciated Ojha for making a right choice.

After going few miles Ojha thought that he still has time to enjoy the market at the city. So, he went to the city market. While he was enjoying the surroundings, he saw that the businessmen were selling his cow in the market for Rs. 2000. He was very furious by the fact that they befooled him. He decided to teach them a lesson. He thought of a plan and went to a nearby hotel. He discussed his story and plan with the hotel owner and gave him 100 Rs. and said “I will bring my two friends and I request you to do exactly as I have told you”. The hotel owner agreed happily.

Then outside he met the businessmen like he has seen them for the first time after the deal. He said “Hey guys, it is all because of you that I have been able to strike a good deal so early, now I am enjoying the market environment. I am starving, why don’t you guys join me for lunch?” Businessmen thought that such foolish hosts don’t come across often, so it won’t be a bad idea to enjoy a meal on his expense. They accepted his offer happily and joined him for lunch at Ojha’s planned destination. After having a delicious food Ojha went to the owner, removed his cap and turned it over the hand of the owner. Then he asked the owner “Have you received the money for the food, sir?” Owner said smilingly “Yes Sir. Thanks for visiting”. The businessmen were simply astonished. After coming out of the hotel they asked Ojha “How did you pay the hotel owner?” Ojha innocently replied “Ah! It’s a secret” Businessmen asked him share his secret as now they are friends. Ojha requested them not to tell the secret to anyone else and said “It is all due to my magic cap. After the deal while coming to the market I met a saint who gave it to me. I just have to lift it and turn it over and it gives me whatever I wish for.” The businessmen got so excited on hearing this that they offered all their money and clothes in lieu of the magic cap. Ojha said “How can I part with the cap? It is so useful and precious. But also cannot say no to my friends” So he took the clothes and money and went back to village. Here in the market businessmen were dancing together as they were thinking that they again befooled the young villager Ojha. They were excited to use the miraculous cap. So later that day they again went to the same hotel and ordered huge meal. When the turn of paying the bill came they went to the owner and turned the cap over and asked “Have you got your payment?” Owner angrily said “No, of course not” They started fighting with the owner. The owner got very angry with them. He called his men to beat the businessmen hard and throw them out of his shop. Meanwhile Ojha had returned to his village where narrated the whole tale to his father. His father could not stop laughing and felt proud of his son’s intelligence.
