✦ A story about Generosity

Two Sadhus and the Invisible Satan

On a hillside, there lived two Sadhus. They were mostly engrossed in their meditation and living in love with each other. They had an earthen pot, and that was their only property.

Perhaps the satan never likes that people should live in harmony and love. He atonce comes into action. The Satan soon found the opportunity and overtook the older Sadhu and as a result his mind changed. He came to the younger Sadhu and said, ‘We both have lived together for a pretty long time and now it’s the time that we should separate. Let us divide our property.’

The younger Sadhu felt very sad and said, ‘Brother, the very thought of your separation is hurting me. But since you have made up your mind to leave, let it be as you wish.’ Saying this he brought their only property, the earthen pot and said, ‘Since the pot cannot be divided, so you may have it.’

The older Sadhu said, ‘I am not a beggar, don’t give me alms, give me just my share of the property. Let us break the pot and divide it.’ The younger Sadhu said that if the pot is broken, it will be of no use to any of us. I therefore suggest that we should decide about the cup by drawing a chit.’

But the older Sadhu who was under the influence of satan, said, ‘No, I will take only my just share. The justice cannot be depended on luck. Whatever may be we will have to break the pot.’

The younger Sadhu preferred not to argue further and submissively said, ‘Alright if you so wish, we will break the pot.’

Hearing this the older Sadhu flared up with anger and shouted, ‘You the weakling Sadhu! Won’t you even fight for the pot?’

The younger Sadhu looked at him in amazement. There was pity in his eyes. He had understood that the Older Sadhu was in the grip of Satan. He knew that one cannot clap single handedly So he kept mum and just sat down in meditational pose. He closed his eyes and thanked God for protecting him from the attack of Satan.
