✦ A story about Generosity

The Humility is Crowned

Once after his coronation, a certain king entered his dream palace, especially prepared for him. He removed his crown and the kingly apron and standing in the midst of the room was feeling overjoyed to think that he was now the emperor.

Suddenly he turned and looked into the mirror which was given to him by his mother. A faquir was coming out of the mirror. The king was surprised and asked, ‘What do you want?’ The Faquir replied, ‘I only want to know why the people have crowned you?’

The king replied: ‘Because I am the most generous and gentle in the entire country.’ The faquir said, ‘Had you been still more generous and fortunate, still you were not worthy of becoming the king.

The king then added: ‘Because I was the bravest and the most courageous, the people have made me their king.’ The Faquir replied that had you been still more brave and powerful, yet you were not worthy of becoming the king.’

Then the king said, ‘Because I was the most intelligent, so I have been crowned.’ The Faquir replied had you been still more learned, even then you were not worthy of becoming a king.

The king repentedly sat down and started crying. All his pride had gone. The Faquir picked up the crown and kept it on his head. Looking at him lovingly, the Faquir vanished in the mirror.

The king got up and looked himself in the mirror. he had the crown on his head now. He had understood that as long as he was proud of his generosity, his strength, his wisdom, he was declared unworthy of the crown. But the moment he became humble and meek the mirror Faquir crowned him. Evidently the humility stands supreme among all the virtues.

One cannot win others by mere strength, wisdom or generosity, but can win all with humility.
