✦ A story about Courage

The Clever Herbalist and the Basket of Sea Water

Tariq was a wise herbalist. He lived in Al-Ramil, a busy harbor village. This village sat between the high sand dunes and the salty sea. It was a famous caravan stop. Travelers came from far away to rest. Ripe dates hung from the tall palms. The villagers shared the fresh water from a deep pool. They used clay channels to carry water to their palms. This water-sharing custom kept the date gardens green and healthy.

One day, a rich farmer named Bashir wanted more water. He had many palms. He wanted all the water for his own date gardens. He told a poor farmer named Kamal to stop using the shared channel.

“My palms produce more fruit for the caravan stop,” Bashir shouted. “I should have all the water!”

Kamal wept. “We must share the water fairly. That is our ancient custom. Without water, my little plants will die.”

They went to the courtyard of the Governor to seek a fair listening. The Governor sat on a high bench. He did not want to make the rich farmer angry. But he wanted the villagers to think he was a fair leader. He thought of an impossible test to settle the dispute.

“I will give the water rights to the one who can bring me a wicker basket full of sea water from the harbor,” the Governor said. He smiled. “But the water must not leak out before you reach this courtyard.”

The people in the crowd whispered. How could anyone carry water in a wicker basket? A basket is full of holes!

Bashir wanted to win. He took a basket and lined it with thick clay. He let it dry. Then he scooped the sea water. But the hot sun cracked the dry clay. The water leaked out fast. Bashir failed.

Kamal sat on the hot sand. He was too afraid to try. He knew he would fail. He was ready to lose his date gardens.

Tariq, the herbalist, saw Kamal’s tears. Tariq knew he had to help. He had the courage to step forward in front of the Governor.

“I will take this test for Kamal,” Tariq said. His voice was steady and calm.

The Governor looked surprised. “Herbalist, if you fail, you will lose your water rights too.”

“I understand,” Tariq said. He bowed.

Tariq walked to the harbor. The whole village followed him. They wanted to see what the clever herbalist would do. Tariq carried a simple wicker basket. He did not use clay. He did not use wax.

He walked into the warm harbor. He lowered the wicker basket into the deep water. The sea water rushed through the holes. It filled the basket completely.

Tariq turned to the Governor. “Your Highness, the basket is full of sea water. Please come and see.”

The Governor walked to the edge of the harbor. He looked down at the basket under the water. “Yes, it is full. But you must carry it to my courtyard!”

Tariq smiled with dry humor. “The sea water is in the basket right now, Your Highness. But water belongs to the sea. If I lift it out of its place, the water will run away. Water can only be held when it is shared in its proper place. Just like our water-sharing channels, if one person tries to lock it up, it disappears. We must leave the water in its shared channel so that all the palms can drink.”

The Governor laughed. He saw the truth in Tariq’s clever act. He realized that water must be shared fairly. He ruled that Bashir and Kamal must share the water-sharing channel, just as their fathers had done.

Kamal thanked Tariq for his brave help. The villagers cheered for the courageous herbalist.

Moral: True courage is speaking the truth to help others when things seem impossible.
