The ways of the worldly people
Saints come into this world to redeem people. But the people instead ill treat them. They put us on the path of God Realization but the worldly people talk ill of them. They work for our betterment, but the people become their enemies. A good mother cuts the boil of her child to cure. But the child does not realize and often starts hitting the mother. These are the ways of the worldly people. To illustrate the point, saints give example of a male elephant ‘Makrand’.
The male elephant ‘Makrand’ used to live in a forest with a number of female elephants. He was very strong and was intolerant of any other male elephant. To enjoy the the company of all other female elephants, one by one he killed the other male elephants. Not only that, of any of the female elephants gave birth to a male elephant, he used to kill him at once. However, he allowed the new born females to live and grow. He wanted that besides him, there should be no other male elephant there. The female elephants soon realized that the elephant ‘Makrand’ is getting old and one day he will die. What will become of us. They too needed the company of a male elephant. So together they decided a way to save the new born male elephant. There was a Sadhu meditating in the same forest. They took the new born male elephant to the hermit of that Sadhu and left him there, hoping that the Sadhu is a kind person. He will surely look after the new born male elephant.
Fortunately, the Sadhu took pity on the new born male elephant and started rearing it up. Soon the baby elephant developed into a powerful male elephant and joined the other elephants in the forest. When ‘Makrand’ saw him, he could not control himself. There was a fatat fight between the two. Since Makrand had become old, the new male elephant overpowered him and finally killed him. Now the new male elephant started enjoying the company of a number of female elephants.
He was aware how the Sadhu had brought him up. So thinking that no other male elephant should be brought up by any such Sadhu hereafter, he became enemy of the Sadhu and killed him. Such are the ways of the worldly people.
