✦ A story about Fair Sharing

The Lamp Keeper and the Balanced Hillside Path

Kenji had a quiet job. He was the lamp keeper of a steep hillside village. His home sat near the rice paddies at the bottom of the slope. Up the hill, a winding stone path led to a beautiful shrine. Many families had homes along this path. Some were simple farmers near the bottom. Others were rich merchants near the top.

Kenji looked after twenty stone lamps on the path. Each afternoon, he walked up the slope. He carried a clay jug of golden seed oil. He promised the village elders to give each lamp the same small cup of oil. This kept the path safe for anyone walking at night.

One autumn, the merchants started a seasonal craft tradition. They made lovely paper screens to sell. Many visitors came to the top of the village to buy them. The merchants wanted the path near their shops to be very bright.

“Give our lamps more oil,” the merchants told Kenji. “The bottom of the hill does not need much light. The farmers are already asleep.”

Kenji shook his head. “I promised to keep the light equal,” he said softly.

The merchants did not like this. They gathered in the busy market near the hillside shrine. They began to shout. They told the other villagers that Kenji was being stubborn. A large crowd gathered. People argued and pointed fingers. The noise grew very loud. Kenji felt a lot of pressure. He wanted to make all people happy, but he had made a promise.

Just then, a quiet monk from a small forest home walked into the market. He did not join the noise. Instead, the monk sat down on a flat stone near a small water basin. He picked up a fallen red leaf. He placed it gently on the water. He watched the leaf float in silence. He breathed in and out.

The monk was so still and calm that people began to look at him. One by one, the shouting stopped. The busy market became quiet. The stillness of the monk seemed to spread like warm sunlight.

Kenji looked at the monk. The silence helped Kenji feel clear inside. He saw the water in the basin. It was perfectly level. It did not favor one side over the other.

Kenji stepped forward. He poured a small, identical cup of oil into the hand of a farmer and a merchant.

“The oil is for all of us,” Kenji said gently. “If we starve the bottom of the hill, the farmers will stumble in the dark. If we crowd the top with too much oil, it will waste what we have. A safe path must shine for each footstep.”

The merchants looked at the quiet monk, then at the level water, and finally at the farmers. They felt the calm of the moment. They saw that Kenji was right. A promise kept in equal parts made the whole hill safe.

That night, the twenty lamps glowed with the same gentle light from the bottom to the top of the hill.

Moral: Keeping promises to treat each person equally brings safety and peace to the whole community.
