Kojo the Beekeeper and the Lion's Honest Share
In a warm orchard settlement, nestled in the vast West African savanna, lived Kojo, a kind beekeeper. His bees hummed among the mango and shea trees, making the sweetest honey. Kojo loved his bees and his sweet work. As the long dry season began, the community always planned carefully. Food stores were gathered in the communal granaries. Everyone helped.
One year, Kojo wished for more space for his buzzing hives. He went to the Lion, who was the respected leader of the animal council. “Mighty Lion,” Kojo said, “I ask for a small corner of the unused orchard. My bees will make more honey there.” The Lion listened with a calm gaze. “If you promise me a fair portion of that extra honey, Kojo, the land is yours,” the Lion rumbled. Kojo happily agreed. He shook the Lion’s paw, and a promise was made.
Kojo worked hard. His new hives thrived, and soon, golden honey flowed. But the dry season grew harder than usual. The sun baked the earth. Water holes shrunk. Food in the communal granaries was counted carefully. The precious honey from Kojo’s hives became a treasure.
Then, the cunning Hyena started to whisper. “Why should Kojo give honey to the Lion?” he grumbled to the other animals. “The Lion has much already. That honey should fill our granaries! Or Kojo should keep it all for himself!” Other animals started to listen to the Hyena. The Monkey chattered, “The dry season is tough. Maybe the Lion will understand if Kojo changes his promise.” Soon, the whole settlement began to speak of it.
At the next drum gathering, where big matters were discussed, the issue of Kojo’s honey was brought up. Many animals looked at Kojo, their eyes full of hope for the honey, or doubt about his promise. The Hyena spoke loudly, asking Kojo to break his word. Kojo stood before the Lion and the entire animal council. He felt the weight of their many eyes. But he remembered his handshake, his solemn promise.
“Mighty Lion, and friends,” Kojo said, his voice clear. “A promise is like a strong branch. It holds up a heavy fruit. If we break it, all our future agreements might fall. I promised the Lion a fair share for the land. It would not be fair to change my mind now, just because times are hard.” The Lion rose, his mane like a golden crown. He looked at Kojo, then at the other animals. “Kojo speaks wisely,” the Lion declared. “Fairness means keeping our word, especially when it is difficult. Kojo honored his promise, and that makes our community strong. He will give me my share, and the rest he will use to care for his bees and his family, and to trade fairly with the granaries as he always does.” The Hyena hung his head. The other animals nodded, understanding that true fairness meant respecting agreements.
Moral: A promise made is a promise kept, for fairness builds trust and strength in all.
