✦ A story about Honesty

Snow White and Seven Dwarfs

There was a queen. She was the most beautiful lady. She had a magic mirror. Often she used to look in the mirror and ask, ‘Mirror!, Mirror! tell me dear, who is the most beautiful here.’ And the Mirror used to reply ‘You, the queen; You, the queen.’ Hearing this she used to feel very happy and satisfied.

The queen had a step daughter. The girl was of a fair complexion and so was named Snow White. Gradually the girl grew up and looked like a beautiful maiden. One day as usual, the queen stood before the magic mirror and said, ‘Mirror!, Mirror! tell me dear, who is the most beautiful here.’ To her surprise this time the mirror didn’t name her, rather it said’ ‘Snow White, Snow White – is the most beautiful here’ The queen was hurt badly. Though Snow White was her daughter, yet she started hating her. It was intolerable for her that someone else should take away the beauty crown from her. She became so maligned against her that she asked her Armed Sentries to take her in the forest and kill her.

The Sentries took her in the forest but seeing her innocent face, they took pity on her and decided to leave her in the forest, hoping that if she has to die, the wild animals would kill her. The Sentries then returned to the palace and told a lie to the queen that they had killed Snow White.

Poor Snow White frightened of wild animals was walking hazardly in the deep and dreadful forest. She was tired and hungry and could not decide what to do. Suddenly to her surprise, she saw a hut. Per chance the door of the hut was not locked. She entered the hut. In the hut there was a long table and seven small chairs around it. On the table there were seven small cups filled with some pudding. She was damn hungry. She took one cup and ate the pudding. But that was not enough for her. The cups were too small. So she took another cup and ate the pudding. Like that she emptied all the cups. This satisfied her hunger to some extent. Now she wanted some rest as she was badly tired. She entered the other partitioned part in the hut and was surprised to see the seven small beds there. She joined them all and lied down on it and as she was too tired, she slept soon.

In fact this was the house of Seven Dwarfs. They had gone out to pick fruits etc. from the forest. In the evening they returned. They were hungry and were anxious to enjoy their pudding prepared in the morning. But to their surprise the cups were empty. They were amazed who did so. They had bolted the door perfectly so that no animal could enter therein. When they entered in their rest room, they were surprised to see the princess sleeping comfortably on all their beds. The princess was so charming and innocent looking that they did not dare wake her up. They all gazed at her lovingly.

When Snow White woke up, She was surprised to see the Dwarfs standing all around her, but she was not frightened. One of the Dwarfs politely asked, ‘Who are you and why are you here in our hut?’ The princcess also sweetly replied, ‘I’m princess Snow White. My mother the queen has sent me to the forest for getting killed by the the Sentries. The sentries took pity on me and left me alive in the forest hoping that the wild animals would kill me. I was only trying to save my life, when I saw your hut and took shelter in it. Please forgive me.’

The Dwarfs took pity on her and said that she could stay with them. Then another Dwarf said, ‘Dear princess you have eaten all our pudding. Can you cook pudding?. The princess said yes she can? Alright, first you cook pudding for us, we are all very hungry. The princess cooked pudding for all. They were happy to have a beautiful companion and a cook. They made a huge bed suitable for her and she stayed with them comfortably.

One day when the queen asked her magic mirror, ‘Mirror!, Mirror! tell me dear, who is the most beautiful here.’ At this the mirror replied, ‘Snow White, Snow White – is the most beautiful here.’ The queen retorted saying, ‘How can that be? She has died.’ ‘No, dear queen, she is very much alive and is at present living in the forest with the Dwarfs’, replied the mirror. The queen was furious to hear it.

She then thought of another plan to kill her. She attired herself as a fruit seller and with a basket of fruits, reached the hut of the Dwarfs in the forest and Cried aloud – Apples, Apples. Snow White was all alone in the hut. Hearing the sound of fruit-seller, she came out. She said, ‘Sorry! I have no money. I cannot buy fruits.’ The queen attired as fruit seller said, ‘Never mind my daughter, you can have one without money.’ And she very cleverly gave her a poisoned apple and left.

The moment, Snow White had a bite of the apple, the effect of the poison was such that she fainted. After sometime when the Dwarfs returned, they all were perturbed seeing her unconscious. Immediately they laid her on the bed and alongwith the bed carried her to a local physician residing in a nearby village.

Per chance on the way, they met a horse rider. He asked, ‘What happened?’ The Dwarfs replied that the princess had fainted, we are taking her to the physician. The horse rider had a close look at Snow White. He found that there was something in her mouth. He took it out and threw it. When the piece of Apple was thrown away, the princess came to senses. The horse rider was a prince. Seeing the most beautiful princess, he fell in love with her at first sight. He ascertained certain details about the princess from the Dwarfs and took a decision to marry her. He there and then proposed to the princess, ‘Will you marry me?’. The pricess also liked the prince and she at-once said, ‘Yes.’ The prince said then come and ride the horse. He took her to his palace and married her. The Dwarfs were happy that the princess was safely going to her new house.

Once again, the queen stood before her magic mirror and asked, ‘Mirror!, Mirror! tell me dear, who is the most beautiful here.’ And again much against her expectations, the mirror replied, ‘Snow White, Snow White – is the most beautiful here’. The queen said that she must have died taking the poisoned apple. The mirror replied, No, my dear queen, Snow White is very much alive and now she is married to the prince of such and such country. To hear it, the queen became so furious and ill-tempered that she took a flower vase and threw it at the mirror. The mirror was broken.

Innocense has its own charm, no made up face can be compared with it. Our thoughts and thinking are part of our beauty. The mirror can easily penetrate into our being and thus speaks the truth.
