✦ A story about Courage

Do good to others and good will come back to you!

Once upon a time, there used to be a lady who would cook food for her family with love and devotion. She would cook a bit extra each day as a buffer and keep it on the window. But to her surprise each day an old man would come there and eat the food from the window and utter “Do good to others and the good will come back to you! Do bad to others and the bad will come back to you”. Each day the same scene continued. The old man would not express gratitude but he would just utter a cryptic sentence and leave. This was making the lady quite unhappy. So out of anger, she decided to put too much salt in the food to teach a lesson to the old man. But after keeping extra salty food on the window, she was constantly restless as her conscience kept telling her that what she has done is not good at all. So, after struggling for a while with her conscience, she decided that she will cook again and replace the food on the window before the old man comes. Just like other days old man came took the food, uttered the same sentence and went away without thanking the lady.

The next day morning, there was a knock on her door. She, anxiously opened the door to find her long-gone son standing with torn clothes on his frail body. Tears of happiness rolled down her cheeks. She brought him inside and asked him about his life struggles. He told her that he had lost everything in business and had no courage to return home with his failures. He said that if he is alive today is only because of an old man who shared his food with him.

After listening to son’s story lady’s heart sank. She felt really guilty about her behavior towards the old man and realized that if she would have given him extra salty food the other day, that food would have been shared with her own son who was already dying famished. She thanked God and thanked the old man in her heart.
