How a Smart Potter Saved the Deep Desert Well
In a warm land, there was a small village. The villagers lived by the rhythms of the seasons, waiting for the summer monsoon rains to cool the dry earth. Before the rains arrived, they gathered water from a deep desert well. To get water, they lowered their heavy earthen jars slowly. If they pulled too fast, the jars would hit the brick walls and shatter, ruining the sweet water for everyone. The village potter, Gopal, made these jars. He was a cheerful man.
One hot afternoon, the villagers gathered in the central courtyard to talk about the upcoming seasonal fair. Suddenly, a grand carriage arrived, carrying a proud minister from the royal court. The minister wore shiny silks and looked very important. His horses were tired and hot. Stepping out, he pointed at the desert well and demanded water.
‘Bring me water!’ the minister shouted. ‘My horses must drink, and we must hurry to the king’s grand court. Pull the rope fast!’ Gopal stepped forward and bowed low. ‘Welcome, great sir,’ Gopal said. ‘Our well is deep. We must pull the jars up slowly so they do not break.’ The minister frowned in anger. ‘Slowly? I do not have time for slow village ways. Do it now!’
The villagers gasped in fear. If the servants pulled too fast, the jars would break and ruin the water. Gopal knew he had to protect the well. He also knew he could not argue directly against the powerful minister. So, Gopal decided to use a bit of playful wisdom.
‘Ah, great minister,’ Gopal said, smiling. ‘You are a wise man. Rushing an earthen jar is risky, but you deserve royal speed. We should not use a slow jar. I have a secret method that fits your royal power.’ The minister was pleased by the praise. ‘Tell me, potter! What is it?’ ‘We shall use a net,’ Gopal said, pointing to a large rope net near his workshop. ‘A net is light and does not hit the walls. Your servants can pull it up as fast as a horse!’
The minister looked at the net. ‘But a net is full of holes! How will it hold water?’ Gopal laughed gently. ‘That is the beauty of royal speed, sir! A net only loses water if you pull it slowly. If your servants pull at lightning speed, the water will be too surprised to escape! It will stay trapped inside.’ The minister did not want to look slow in front of the crowd. ‘Of course!’ he declared. ‘My servants are the fastest. Tie the net to the rope!’
The servants dropped the net into the deep well. ‘Pull!’ the minister ordered. The servants ran across the dusty ground, pulling the rope as fast as they could. The net flew out of the well and landed on the sand, completely dry. Gopal sighed. ‘Oh, dear! The water was surprised, but your servants were a bit too slow. Try again, much faster!’ The servants tried again, running even faster under the hot sun. Once more, the net came up empty. The villagers smiled, hiding their faces.
The proud minister looked at the dry net, then at the smiling villagers. He realized his foolishness. Rushing had only brought empty nets and tired servants. He looked at the potter. ‘Perhaps speed is not always the best path,’ the minister said softly. Gopal nodded. ‘Indeed, sir. In our village, we trust each other to keep the well safe. Rushing breaks our jars and ruins our water. If we work carefully together, everyone gets to drink.’ The minister agreed. He waited patiently as Gopal slowly lowered a sturdy earthen jar and pulled up sweet, cool water.
Moral: When we work patiently and trust each other, we keep our community safe and happy.
